High quality reflection in combination with supportive and constructive feedback is essential for the professional development of all trainee doctors (trainees).

This guide builds on the 2016 Academy report Improving Assessment: Further Guidance and Recommendations1, which details the background, current status and likely developments in assessment in the workplace. The recommendations of the report include a number on feedback and learning development.

There are many methods that can enable valuable reflection and feedback as part of individual development. However, these activities may also be undertaken poorly and may even be counterproductive to the learning process.

This guide focuses on practical information for trainees and trainers on how trainee self-reflection, feedback from the trainer and trainer self-reflection can improve the performance and value of formative Workplace Based Assessments (WBAs)
